Different Types of Restaurants Are Fun For Dining Out

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:04 pm

Going out to eat can be fun and enjoyable for everyone. Today’s restaurants range from the neighborhood diner to one that has five star reviews. Sometimes, the most popular restaurant for dining out is the neighborhood diner. What keeps people coming back are the food and the atmosphere. It’s usually where you go to meet friends after work or after a local sporting event. It has a sense of community and it’s a well-loved part of the town. It’s a restaurant that usually offers bottomless coffee, home cooking, specials that you can’t get anywhere else and service with a smile. Almost every neighborhood has one.

Ethnic restaurants are also a great place for dining out. They offer food that’s specific to one country or area. The restaurants are usually found in ethnic parts of a city. The best way to get to know the food, if you’re not familiar with it, is to go with someone who is. If you do go alone, ask the cook, waiter or waitress to help you with your selection. Some dishes can be very spicy or have ingredients that are not to your liking. Some restaurants have a sampler plate on their menus so you can try small amounts of different food. Trying new foods is a good way of broadening your tastes.

Family oriented restaurants make dining out with your family easy. These restaurants are usually kid-friendly and offer a menu that caters to the adult and the smallest member at the table. They also have crayons and puzzles on hand to keep the kids busy until their meals arrive. Some family oriented restaurants are all about kids. They have age appropriate amusements that keep kids and adults entertained for hours. They’re a great place to have a child’s birthday party.

Sports restaurants are where many people go to get good food and watch a game or two. Many sports restaurants have several (or more) big screen TVs placed around the room. Each TV is tuned to a game (sometimes different games) so you’ll never have to miss a goal, touchdown or home run. Dining out with a group of friends is usually fun at a sports restaurant. The menus range from appetizers to burgers and steaks. Sometimes a restaurant will offer specials for each touchdown or score that the home team makes. Depending on the team, this can be a real inexpensive day out.

How to Camp – An Ultimate Beginner’s Guide

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:13 am

Now I know what you are telling yourself…..I would really like to camp, it looks fun but I have no idea how to camp, what to bring or what to expect. There are a few things that you really have to determine before you can figure out what you need to do to get ready for your camping trip.  Answering the following basic questions will guide you to finding your footing.

1.  What type of camping have you decided to do?  Did you want to RV camp?  Camper/Trailer camp?  Tent camp?  Backpack/Hike camp?  Canoe/kayak camp?

Determining the type of camping you want to do can aid you in what sort of equipment and expertise is needed.  For example, you would need a vastly different sort of equipment for RV camping versus hiking camping.

Camping descriptions:

RV Camping (or recreational vehicle camping) is most like living at home because you bring a furnished vehicle that you basically live in with you.  You can make your RV just as comfy as you like.  Everything that you need from home can most likely be brought with you in your RV.  All you really need to think about are what foods and personal items you would like to stock it with.  This type of camping is generally for the people who do not like to “rough it” but also might like to be social since many times RV are parked fairly near each other or in similar sections.  Though there are some normal maintenance items with RVs, you basically park them and live in them.

Camper or Trailer camping is just a step more rugged than RV camping.  Many times campers or trailers do not have showers or toilets, unlike most RVs.  Depending on the camper or trailer, a refrigerator may not be included either.  Generally, camper or trailer camping is more for people who do not like to sleep on the ground or worry about severe weather but still want to get out there.

Tent camping is generally more for people who would like to “rough it.”  Tent camping requires you to think about all of your basic needs ahead of time (food, hygiene, restroom requirements, shelter, seeing at night, warmth).  There are actually varying levels of tent camping as well.  Some people like to bring a tent and shop for all of their needs while others like to camp in more remote areas away from people.  Packing for a tent camping trip can be time consuming because you have to think of everything you might need.

Backpacking or Hiking camping is a bit more for the experienced campers.  Think about it…everything you think you are going to need you have to be able to strap to your back and carry it for quite a distance.  You have to be able to pack well and pack light!

Canoe/kayak camping is much like hiking camping in regards to packing but you have to add another element.  You have to make sure that everything is waterproof.  Canoe/kayak camping would be for the more experienced camper and of course, for people who know how to canoe and/or kayak.

Recommendations for camping situations:

RV Camping – Shop around and do research before you decide on an RV for purchase.  Talk to people who already own them and ask them what they like and don’t like about their particular model.  Go to RV dealerships and walk through a bunch of them.  Maybe, go as far as renting an RV on a small trip to see what you do or don’t like about RV camping.

Camper/Trailer Camping – Because there might not be amenities like a refrigerator, more setup and forethought is required.  You most likely will have to purchase a cooler or two to keep your food and beverages chilled.  Also, you may have to think about generators if you would like to run electrical items.  Though you might have beds in the camper you may have to put bedding in.

Tent Camping – Think about the type of tent camping you’d like to do.  Does my tent have to be lightweight?  Waterproof?  Wind sturdy?  What size tent do I need (family size or just for me)?  What terrain will I be camping on?  A good camping tent can make all the difference on your trip.

Backpacking/Hiking Camping – Look for lightweight supplies, as you have to carry them all.  Equipment research into lighter weight sturdy hiking backpacks is a good idea.  Always check ahead of time if the area you wish to hike and camp allows people to do so.  Pay attention to “no trespassing” signs and heed them.  Check your weather!  You need to know what equipment to pack for the weather.  It is also recommended that you camp with a buddy.  In case something should happen, there should be someone who can go get help.

Canoe/kayak Camping – It might be advisable to take some canoe or kayak lessons (and swimming lessons) before attempting a camping trip in this way.  Perhaps you may wish to rent a canoe or kayak to make sure you like the activity before diving in.

2.  Where have you decided to go camping?  Are you going to be camping in the Desert?  Beach?  Forest/woods?

This is a very important question to answer in order to figure out your main needs.  You’d prepare very differently for desert camping than you would for camping in the forest.

In Desert camping temperatures can have extreme ranges from the heat of the day to the cold of the night.  The biggest threats (most of the year) in the desert are the sun and dehydration.  It is very important to protect yourself with sunscreen and drink plenty of water.  Due to the dry air you are not aware of how much you are perspiring because it evaporates so quickly off your skin.

Beach camping is very nice but you should prepare for it.  Due to the nature of sand it is difficult to weigh things down with normal tent stakes.  There are tent stakes that are much longer for this specific purpose.  You also must be prepared for the possibility that sand could get into everything.  Depending on how deep in the sand you’d like to go you should think about the vehicle you are using to get there.  Again, with the nature of sand it may be difficult to dig yourself back out.  You may wish to bring a shovel or random piece of wood.

Forest/woods are usually great for shelter from rainstorms and sun.  They are also great for hammocks but you have to be aware of biting insects and certain itchy plants.  Bug spray would be a huge recommendation for camping in the woods.

3.  When or what time of the year are you going camping?

Figuring out what type of weather you are going to have to deal with while camping is key.  Personally, I think this is the most important information required to plan a proper camping trip.  Of course if you have an RV, this information probably doesn’t help you because you aren’t exposed to the elements.

Colder weather camping obviously requires warmer clothes but you may wish to consider a warmer camping sleeping bag regardless of what method of shelter you are using.

Wetter weather camping means that your terrain may be more difficult to deal with.  If you are tent camping, it would be recommended to lay a tarp under your tent, look for slightly higher ground to pitch your tent and always use your rain flys.

In hotter weather always make sure to keep yourself hydrated.  If you bring your water with you, bring lots.  If you are hiking camping, you may wish to consider a water treatment or a camping water filter.

Congratulations on taking your first step toward camping by answering these preliminary questions.  You are now on your way to planning for a camping trip tailored more to your specific needs and desires.

What is Children’s Literature?

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:03 pm

It may seem strange to think that there is some question as to what constitutes a children’s book for many after all this would seem like a question with an obvious answer. A children’s book was after all created for children. However Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain one of the books considered to be classical children’s literature was originally intended for adults and as indeed received some past censorship because of how interpret it was considered for children. The Grimm’s fairy tales also where written initially for adults, yet they where bought for children. This situation of children taking over what was supposed to be an book for adults has led to many problems. After all society then complains that the story was not appropriate for children, and so attacks to book. Further the book not being appropriate for children perhaps does cause some social problems. Yet we still seem to consider many such books as children’s literature.

Why is it books written for adults become children’s books? Or at least books read by children. Although it is perhaps impossible to state all the reasons for this situation, I would forward three theories on ways in which this can occur.

The first reason is that a book offers a fantastic reality, an imaginative story, children like such stories and so for whatever reason it is presumed that such imaginativeness is in the realm of children’s literature. This could for example be the case with Gulliver’s Travels and of course the Grimm’s Fairy Tales. In many ways I would argue it’s sad that if a story is fun and imaginative it is automatically pushed off into the realm of children. Not that children’s literature is lesser, indeed this imaginativeness has helped in many ways to make it superior to that created for adults. Rather it is sad that adults do not presume that such creative genius is worth more of their time.

Another reason which a book might become children’s literature is that it is about a child, for some reason a child character makes people automatically assume a child should read it, as if they are the only ones who can relate to a child. This is a ridiculous notion of course, we where all children and besides of which all such books where written by intelligent adults.

The final reason I will propose is that many books and works of art intended for adults become children’s as a means of expanding their reach or extending their life. This is why for example one will find the works of Jane Austen in the children’s literature section at the book store with a little charm.

This still does not answer the question of what is children’s literature. Part of the problem here may be that we have not yet truly defined the question, broad questions have broad answers. The question may be what should parents have their children read, or what should educators and those studying children’s literature study in order to learn about the impact of literature on children? In the case of the first question the answer is in regards to the parents beliefs and their kids reaction to things. If a parent does not believe their kid should be exposed to something then it does not constitute children’s literature for that kid. This definition of course makes the whole field of children’s books very difficult as there are so many differing views on what is acceptable for children to read.

However this problem would beg the question, is the purpose of the definition to help people study children’s literature or to help parents decide which books their kids can read? In the case of the purpose for study children’s literature would constitute all books which children regularly read. After all the purpose of study is to determine what is acceptable to read and what impact such readings have on children, as will as ways to make future books better. For this purpose to be effective all books which children read must be included.

Part of the difficulty of course with determining what constitutes children’s literature is that there is some debate as to what children are.

After all different cultures have at times believed many different things about children. However I would point out that this in and of itself is exactly the point, childhood is viewed as different by different cultures. It is then a cultural definition, one which our society can answer and change. Certainly it is difficult for people to accept this idea, and for many the idea that the culture determines someone’s role is tantamount to prejudice, however when it comes to defining a state and an impact we are indeed looking at cultural variables. One cannot for example assume that a picture book based on the Impressionist style, and with Swedish Motifs would have the same impact on Americans as it does Japanese or Swedes. It is culture which determines the role literature plays in our lives so it is through a cultures definitions of something that that thing should be defined. Further accepting one cultures definition of what defines children and not another’s is prejudice.

In American culture this definition of child has been constructed in a way as Minors to the age of 18, however not all of these ages are considered children per say, they are teenagers, pre-teens, Elementary, Preschool, Toddlers and more. However as a society we have defined these groups and so a wish to understand their demographic must begin with the societies definitions of them. Arguing that a culture is wrong is often a mute point, just as literature is a social construct many of the emotions and impact surrounding it are too.

Children’s literature then according to my definition and the definition which will be found throughout this site is literature which impacts directly through reading a fairly decent percentage of the population which is considered children by the culture it is from.

Or in the case of cross-cultural analysis such impacts will extend to ages determined by the culture with the oldest children or the largest definition of them. Why? Because in many cases especially historical ones children where considered adults fairly young, yet if we want to compare differences in impact between 8 year olds we must study both sets of 8 year olds. It is important to stress that this is not a means to push one cultures definition on another it is merely a research construct intended to help study literature, so that we can better understand its impact.

Ty Hulse has degree’s in art and psychology with both with a children’s and a cross-cultural focus. He is currently working to create the site Zeluna.net which discusses Children’s Literature and Picture Books, as will as Fairy Tales.

Own Your Dream Sports Car at an Affordable Price

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:09 am

Want to take a race with wind! Not a bad idea at all; only you need to have the right sports car to give you company. Cars are the most passionate possessions in the boy’s toy’s list especially when it comes to throwing challenge to the wind. So how do you find your dream sports car that gives you the height of joy at the top speed, yet comes for an affordable price? Well, here are a few useful tips to find out your sports car without burning a hole in your pocket.

Begin with the used cars

The most practical way of buying your car for most affordable price is to go for a used sports car. You can look for the classic sports cars like Fiat or Triumph, which can be restored back to their old glory for little price. These pre owned cars will help you to save on your sports car budget without cutting down on your adrenaline rush at the time of wild driving of a sports car. Owning and driving sports car become really enjoyable when you know where to find the most lucrative deals. There are two surefire ways of finding your dream sports car at an affordable price.

Online auction

Ask around and most of the auto enthusiasts will let you know that the best place for finding your dream sports car is the internet auto auctions. If you really want to strike it big, then take a virtual journey through the online auction of eBay Motors— the largest online auction in the world. The vast range of comparison that you can experience here is really amazing. But the best thing about eBay Motors is: you can strike gold here by taking the advantage of some real good bargains.

However you should take notice of some important areas like shipment and model number before entering into any sort of commitment.

Deals through friendly car mechanic

One way of grabbing a great bargain is forging a rapport with your local car mechanic. He is the best person to supply you with valuable information about fabulous deals at an unbelievable bargain. Informing beforehand your mechanic about the sports car you are looking for will definitely help you to come across the sports car of your dream. The mechanic is a person to rely on so far as buying a used car is concerned because the mechanic has worked on the car and he knows the exact condition of the car.

Sometimes the car owners fail to foot the bill of the car repairing and in that case the mechanic gets back his money by putting the car for sale. This situation can offer you a particularly lucrative deal as it allows for great bargains.

In case you do not happen to find the sports car of your dream in pre owned market, keep an eye on the advertisements put up by the car dealers; sometimes car dealers offer big rebates and huge discounts that make for a really lucrative deal. Grab these offers to become the proud owner of a brand new sports car that won’t make you break the bank.

Your First Car In USA

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:13 am

Your mobility depends too much on your possession of a private vehicle. You may go for a car, motorcycle or truck as your own vehicle. But due to severe weather conditions in many regions it is not a good idea to depend on motorcycles all the time. It is also not a good idea to have a truck or SUV as they drink lot of gas and the maintenance is high. Somewhere in the middle and perfectly positioned vehicle for Desi would be a car. There are various types of cars to suite your need.

What you should have

If you are a single man and do not depend primarily on your car for commuting to your work, then go for anything as you wish.

There are coupes which have capacity for 4 persons but only two big doors. Primarily these cars are designed keeping in view for two, driver and one passenger. The other model is the sedan which has capacity for 5 and has 4 doors. This can also be called a family car. Depending on the size of the car, they are categorized as Compact, Mid-sized and Full. Compact cars are very small in size and have a good mileage per gallon too. Some manufacturers even make two seated compact cars. The power of the compact car is also little less than the cars of other categories. There are other cars that have powerful engines and are rated as sports cars.

On the contrary, if you have a big family and need more space in your vehicle, then go for van/SUV. But I wont suggest this idea to people who have just come to US, before/after marriage and don’t have any kids.

Besides, it is always your dream and desire that makes you to go for a particular type and model. But before deciding upon something, you must give a thought to the other factors like, the mileage, sitting capacity, transmission, trunk capacity, engine power, ease of driving/safety, interior, power doors and anti-theft devices. Also your affordability plays a major role in purchasing a vehicle.

Do you have a driver license yet? It is most important to have one before going for a vehicle. Various states have different rules for issuing drivers license. You can logon to Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sites to know about the pre-requisites and methods of getting one driver license for your state. Normally it involves a written examination, minor vision test and a road test.

The never-ending comparison

Now you have to decide whether to buy a new car or a used car. I wont suggest you any thing or force you to go for what I think is right, but you must know the good and bad things involved in each.

Used Cars

* They are cheaper.

* They may be old.

* They might have more than one owner.

* They could be purchased from private parties or authorized dealers.

* They might have gone through serious maintenance/repair in the past.

* They might have gone through an accident in the past.

* Some parts/components are just about to die.

* There may not be enough warranty/guaranty on some expensive parts.

* The mileage may not be good.

* They may need more maintenance.

* They may not be reliable for long drives.

* Resale may be a headache.

New Cars

* They are not cheap.

* They are covered under manufacturer/dealer warranty.

* Their fuel efficiency must meet the specification.

* There is the satisfaction of owning a new car.

* Easy to get a finance for new car than a used car.

* No need to worry about the engine, body, suspension, tyre, batteries and interior conditions.

* Insurance premium may be higher.

* Can only be bought from an authorized dealer.

There are many other things that can be discussed as advantages and disadvantages under both the headings. However, I don’t want to focus on them right now. If you are convinced to buy a new car, then go for it.

Your target

Now it is the time for you to decide the Make, Model and Type of your car. In US you will find hundreds of Make and Models (no Hind Motors/Maruti cars of course). From a Desi prospect I would say it is better to start with Honda/Toyota/Nissan. These Japanese car manufacturers know our requirement and never ditch us on the highways. The engines are good and prices are low. They run long enough before giving up. The life of a Honda/Toyota is considered to be 300K miles. But the look and interior designs are not at par with the American/European cars.

Buying a New Car

Take a cup of coffee, chat with your friends and go through some reviews before you decide upon the make model and color of your first dream car in USA. Check for the existing/upcoming models of your car by logging onto the sites. Select the color and interior and look at the car through the simulator. The most important thing that you must consider here is that, when the next model is going to be released. If it is very soon, then don’t go for it, because after you buy your car, you will see the newer model in the market and the resale value of your car will fall drastically.

Cars with automatic transmission and power window have good resale value. ABS and anti-theft devices are added advantages. Leather interior is as per your wish.

Now you have all the details in your mind and the budget is also finalized. Next step is to study the finance market and look for the bank/credit union who gives the best APR. Also don’t forget to decide upon your auto insurance. Find out a good insurance company and try to get a quote from them. The premium varies from place to place. With all these things set up, go to the Auto-Mall of your city. Go for a test drive for the car you have already decided. Beware of the car sales representatives. They will always try to sale you the most expensive car they have. But you shouldn’t deviate from your decision. Try to bargain with them for a possible reduction in their margin and ask for extra accessories.

What is the status of the loan? Have you arranged one or you want the dealer to make some arrangements for you? Always try to bring down the APR. If you are very new to US and don’t have any credit score, you may not get a good APR. However, dont worry about the APR right now. You can always refinance the loan with a better APR after you buildup the credit history after few months of repayment of the loan.

Once the deal is final, you need to sign some papers and then provide the Insurance details if you have. Otherwise, you could also provide the insurance agents phone number and the sales representative will talk to the insurance agent to get the car insured before leaving their premises (dont worry too much for the insurance premiums now, it is important to get your car insured before you drive out of the dealers premises, however you can easily change your insurance later, if you find a better one). In case you didn’t get any insurance, you can always go for binder insurance, but they are quite expensive, but you can always cancel them in the middle once you establish your insurance with somebody else and get the refund for the unused portion of your premium.

The next thing is to make the financial paper work. You will be guided to the dealers accounts department and one of the accountants will assist you in finalizing the loan and payment for the car. At that time they will try to sale an extended warranty for another 3 years after the manufacturers warranty. It is you who will decide for that. Don’t listen to them, but evaluate it being unbiased. They will try to sale so many other things like paint guard, gap insurance etc. I would suggest not to go with all these things except paint-guard.

After everything is over, they will apply for the vehicle registration/license plate to DMV on your behalf and give you the temporary ownership license (stuck to the windshield of your car). As far as I know, they wash the car and give you a full tank as a compliment before you drive your car back home.

New cars don’t give you much trouble as long as you do all the regular oil change and maintenance in time.

Buying a Used Car

Used cars are good but not as new cars. They are much cheaper than the new cars, but at the cost of your peace of mind. You can buy used cars from either a private party or from any dealer. Here also you have to decide your budget and the make, model and year of the car that you need. Also the other main factor is the odometer reading.

There are many sites that give you the links for used cars for sale. You can also refer to the local news papers for any such advertisement. There are places in some cities where people come with their cars for auction/sale. Since you are new, don’t go to such places. Rather get contact information from news paper ads or internet. Get the details of the car like make, model and year of the car, miles it has run, condition of batteries, tires and engine condition etc.

Now go to Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) or Edmund (www.edmund.com) and try to evaluate the car. KBB will ask you some question depending upon the private trading or buying from dealer. After you enter data about the private trading car, it will show you an approximate value of the car.

Private Party

If you are buying a used car from a private party, then you need to be more cautious about certain things like, the engine condition, the body condition, the interior and the accident/maintenance history of the car. Don’t go for cars that have already run almost 300K miles (for Honda and Toyota). You can start locating for used cars for sale from various sources like, news papers, local ads and internet. After locating the availability near your place, prepare your matrix.

* Call each of them to fix an appointment for trial.

* Get the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) from the owner.

* Check for the approximate cost of the car using KBB or EDMUND sites.

* Compare the advertised price with the approximate cost that you arrived at.

* Use the VIN to find out accident/maintenance history from CarFax.com and check for any major incident. There will be a registration fee for CarFax.com, go for the one month pack.

* Talk to a mechanic for pre-purchase inspection of the vehicle. Mechanics charge around $50 per car. It is better to go to some brand names like Pep-Boys. They are good and reliable, but you may need to take an appointment beforehand.

* Go to the owner, see the car physically (for any visible dents, body color, torn airbag containers and interior) and then drive it with the owner.

* Take the car to the mechanic and have it inspected.

* (All the cars need a timing belt replacement after running for around 100K miles, so if the car is around or over 100K, then you need to figure out if the timing belt has been replaced, this information could be obtained from the CarFax report too. One thing you must remember that, in US, the auto spare parts are not that expensive, but the labor charge to install them is too high.)

* The mechanic will give you a report, in which it will indicate the current condition of the car and what needs to be fixed with a rough estimation.

* Check for the vehicle registration, is it current?

* Is the vehicle smog certified?

With the Kelly Blue Book report, CarFax report and the mechanics report, you can have a good bargain with the owner. If you really like the car and every thing looks OK to you, then start bargaining. Don’t focus more on the tires/batteries, they are not that important as the engine.

NEVER BUY A CAR THAT HAS A SALVAGED TITLE.

Once you have decided to buy the car, talk to the owner about the payment and mode of payment (check or cash). The owner has to give you a pink slip indicating that you paid for the car and it is yours now. He cant simply lodge a complaint with the police saying you have stolen his car. It is his duty to inform the DMV office about the sale and transfer of title. You should also apply to DMV for transferring the title to your name. For registration, you will need the pink slip, the insurance (get one immediately) and smog certification. After you apply for the transfer of the vehicle registration into your name, you are the proud owner of the car.

It is too cumbersome to buy a used car from a private party, sometimes it is too risky and in all the cases it is damn cheaper. For some unlucky guys it might have resulted in spending huge money on maintenance the next day. But it is not always true. However, you are supposed to visit the mechanic frequently and spend lot of time there.

Buying from Dealer

The next best thing that you can do is to buy a used car from a dealer. It may not be as cheaper as buying from private party, but 100 times more reliable. Even some dealers give warranty on the used cars they sale. They buy the used cars, clean them up, do a thorough checking of the engine and repair any damages, dents etc before putting them on sale. You don’t have to take the car to a mechanic for inspection, worry about the smog certification. But never forget to check the approximate price through KBB and have a CarFax report handy before making a deal with the dealer. Normally, good dealers don’t keep cars for sale that have any major issues like bad accident history, salvaged title etc.

Go to the dealer, talk to the sales representative about your purpose. He/she will show you all the different used cars they have that fits your requirement as well as your budget. Once you have selected the model, make and color, go for a test drive (don’t forget to check the odometer reading). If everything feels ok to you, then go to the dealers office and access their computer to logon to KBB for approximate pricing as well as to CarFax for accident/maintenance history for that car. Some dealers even do this for free. Now with all these things handy, start the bargain. You must always consider the worry free deal with the worth of the vehicle you are paying for. You may end up paying a little more than that of a private party deal, but there wont be any worries after you buy the car. If there will be any problem with the car (which is covered under warranty), you can always comeback to the dealer for having it fixed for free. The dealer may also arrange a loan for you and take care of the other formalities like title transfer etc. You will save a lot of time/worries in this. Time is important and costly in this country. So it is your call again.

After you finalize the deal, it follows the same process as a new car purchase. So finish all paper work and drive the car safely back home.

Tips

* If you own an old used car that needs maintenance and the mechanic gives you a list of jobs to be done, then do all of them once. That way you may save a lot of labor charge.

* As per my experience, buying a new car is always better than buying a used car from a dealer and buying a used car from a dealer is always safer than buying a used car from a third party.

* It seems to be a huge amount in the beginning to buy a new car. But if you compare the money spent for new (repay the loan) and used car (repair/maintenance), then over a period of 3 years they will almost equate with each other. So, why not to enjoy the ride of a new car.

Writing to Celebrities For Autographs

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:59 pm

One of the easiest ways to build a collection of autographed celebrity photos is to ask the celebrities themselves for the photos. Sending out these autographed photos is actually a very smart career move for these celebrities as it helps to build their fan base and get people excited and talking about these celebrities. It only makes sense for these celebrities to honor the requests of their fans and keep them happy. If you are looking to get an autographed celebrity photo from one of your favorite stars, there are only a few simple steps which you will need to take!

First, you should write a short letter to the celebrity, expressing your admiration of their talent and ask for an autographed photo which you can add to your collection. If your letter is concise and respectful, there will be no reason for the celebrity to deny your wishes. One of the main jobs of a celebrity is to keep their fans happy, for a happy fan ensures an interest in their career for a long time to come. If a celebrity goes out of their way to ignore or disrespect a fan, this will not bode well for their public image.

Secondly, whenever writing to request an autographed celebrity photo, you should include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. This is only polite as you are asking the star to send you something. You shouldn’t ask that celebrity to pay for the postage as well. By sending a self-addressed stamped envelope, you are greatly increasing your chances of receiving a reply from your favorite celebrity with something special inside. This envelope will ensure that not only will the celebrity and their team not have to pay for the postage to send the autographed photo back to you, but that the envelope will be correctly address and not sent somewhere else by mistake.

Many people will also recommend that you send a photo for the celebrity to sign. If the celebrity that you request a photo from doesn’t happen to have any photos on hand, your request may get lost in the shuffle. Additionally, by sending a photo, all you are requesting from the celebrity is their autograph. They will not need to supply anything other than a small fraction of their time. With so much to gain and nearly nothing to lose, any celebrity will take this small amount of time and effort to make their fans happy.

The most important thing to remember when collecting autographed celebrity photos is to always be respectful of the star. By giving them as little to do as possible to make you happy, the chances of them doing so are much greater. Any celebrity would be happy to please a fan and when very little needs done to accomplish this task, many celebrities would be delighted at the opportunity. You must remember that these people are celebrities only because of fans like you and, while remaining respectful of them, you can easily encourage them to show their appreciation with an autograph.

How to Find Good Childcare Service

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:27 pm

America is a mobile society. Extended families more often than not live hours or days away from each other, or if they do live close to each other, grandma or grandpa may still be in the workforce. Unlike 40 or 50 years ago, today’s parents are raising their children without much help from extended families. More households have both parents working or are headed by a single parent who works. How do these households find good childcare?

One option is to run a help wanted ad in the newspaper. This can be costly and time consuming. In addition to paying for the ad space in the paper, you will have to answer questions about the job on the phone, collect resumes, read through them and then interview potential candidates. Another option is asking friends to recommend a childcare provider to you. Or, you could answer ads in the newspaper advertising childcare services. All of these options require meeting with the prospective provider, but even at this point you cannot be sure that they are representing themselves truthfully unless you run a background check, which will also cost you money.

There is an easier, less costly, less time consuming way to find childcare. Thanks to the internet, childcare services have emerged to help solve the childcare problem. Childcare services act as a clearinghouse where childcare providers and families can connect.

Each childcare provider who signs up with the service completes a profile which includes a picture of the provider, availability, type of care provided (nanny, babysitter, au pair, last minute care, special needs care), experience with children, rate, age, gender, location and contact information. People looking for childcare can browse the providers and/or post a their own profile.

Information can be searched by zip code to locate providers who serve a given area. It is free to search and browse childcare providers, but the provider’s contact information will only be shown once the person searching for childcare becomes a paying member of the site. On becoming a paying member of the online childcare service, families gain access to provider contact information, can do free background checks through the service, as well as check the provider’s references.

Whether the childcare need is a live-in au pair, a regular babysitter or a babysitter who will take care of sick children, using an online childcare service streamlines the process of finding childcare and minimizes the risk for families and providers alike.

Four Criteria Of A Great Romance Movie

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:01 am

Romance movies are timeless. Everyone has his or her favorite romance movie. Most of the time, the romance movies serve a purpose, mostly, as an escapism. One thing that these movies do is that they keep the idea of romance alive. No matter how happy or tragic the ending is, romance movies are loved by its viewers for entertaining them and keeping their dream alive.

It begs a question.. what makes a great romance movie? There are some actors and actresses who are great for romance movies and some who do not. There are some stories that are simply remarkable and there are some stories that make you wonder who made it the first place. I believe that there are at least four criteria of a great romantic movie

1. Likability of the Leads

First and foremost, the leads in the movie must be ‘likable’, meaning that the target audience love them and believe that they are lovers or can be lovers in real life. Which means that they must have chemistry between them. When the chemistry is there, it makes the interactions in the movie likable and believable. And it is important for the audience to like the leads for them to ‘get’ the movie.

This factor made Meg Ryan, the romantic comedy queen in late 80s / early 90s. Her two major performance in ‘When Harry Meet Sally’ and ‘Sleepless In Seattle’, paired with two great leading men, Billy Crystal and Tom Hanks, was a major tour de force. In both movies, she ‘clicked’ with both of them, which gave the movies critical and commercial success.

2. Simple And Clear Storyline

Another important criteria is the storyline. It has to be simple and clear, so that the viewer can understand what is going on in the movie, which means, who are the parties in love and what is the situation. Romance movies are not good grounds to do plot twist and turns as it will turn off the viewers as it will interfere with the viewers enjoyment of the romance. An example of good storyline was the movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, in 2005. The movie did an excellent job in portraying the romance of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Darcy, showing the ‘games’ that both played with each other till they eventually fell in love in the end.

3. Movie Location / Background

The role of the movie location and background is to support and enhance the romance movie. It is not very important but it does play a role. The background refers to the cast that surrounds the leads, for example, family members or office mate. The movie location refers where the movie is situated. Usually, it is the movie locations that spice up the romance. A good example of the movie background is the cast of Four Weddings and a Funeral. In the movie, Charles’ set of eclectic friends complimented his ‘adventures’ in pursuing Carrie. A good example of movie location would be the location of Venice and Positano in Only You, starring Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey, where it made the romance in the movie magical, with glorious location scenes, Italian language and songs.

4. Excellent Movie Song / Soundtrack

And finally, the killer criteria would be the song or soundtrack of the movie, as it enhances and reminds the viewer of the romance movie experience. Usually, it would be a pop song sung by the popular artist and it becomes a chart topper. An obvious example would be the song “My Heart Will Go On” sung by Celine Dion from the movie Titanic. The song functions as a killer hook that drives the success of the movie and does help the commercial success of the movie soundtrack and movie itself. In the movie, the song typically appears either as a short music clip or becomes an instrumental background.

Well, those are the four criteria that I think makes a great romance movie. There might be others but these are the four main criteria and when all four criteria appear in a romance movie, it is almost certain that the movie becomes a commercial and critical hit.

Azmir Ismail loves to watch romance movies, especially romantic comedies. His favorite romantic movie is Four Weddings And A Funeral, which he watches at least once a month:D He writes his reviews of romantic movies at http://www.myromancemoviereview.com

Student Health Insurance – Tips to Help You Choose the Right Policy

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 9:11 am

It is summer 2006. Young and not so young people are graduating from school and there are millions of people who are starting to think about student health insurance. Here are some tips for parents and students who are looking for health insurance for a college student, health insurance for a graduating college student or health insurance for an older graduate student. There are a lot of choices. This article is designed to give you an overview of the choices available to students.

Health Insurance For College Students You should explore all of the medical plan options available to you. Your choices may include:

  1. Getting health insurance through the student’s employer.
  2. Getting medical insurance through your local Blue Cross Blue Shield or other private health insurance plan.
  3. Getting “college student health insurance” through a plan offered by their college or university.
  4. Getting health insurance as a dependent on the policy of a parent or spouse.

When looking for the non-group health insurance plans that are available in your area, you may want to contact your state’s insurance department. You can contact them and find out which companies market individual health insurance in your area. Healthcare choices for the out-of-state student If you live on campus, look into the plans offered in each area. If your parents live in Florida, but you go to school in Texas, you should see what health insurance plans are available to you in both states. A student who has a permanent address of Connecticut and attends Yale in New Haven should only purchase a Connecticut-approved plan. If the same student transfers to UCLA, he or she can also explore plans offered in California. Some plans may even charge differently based on your zip code, so even if your two addresses are in the same state, you may still save money by looking at rates for both areas. Health Insurance For A Graduating College Student You should explore all of the medical plan options available to you. Your choices may include:

  1. Getting health insurance through the former student’s employer.
  2. Getting medical insurance through your local Blue Cross Blue Shield or other private health insurance plan.
  3. Purchasing short-term health insurance to cover you until your employer-sponsored plan becomes effective.
  4. Getting health insurance as a dependent on the policy of a parent or spouse.

Medical Insurance Plans to Watch Out For:

  • Discount plans. These are not health insurance plans! These plans can save you money on health care, but only offer discounted services and not true insurance benefits. If you had a major accident or sickness, getting 25% off of a healthcare bill of $50,000 may not give you the benefits you hoped for.
  • Accident only plans. Students get the flu, mono and even cancer. Being covered with an accident only plan can offer substandard coverage when compare to a comprehensive health insurance plan. (By the way, an unplanned pregnancy is not considered an accident either J. :-) )
  • Hospital Only or Basic Plans. These plans tend to offer good coverage in the hospital but little coverage outside of the hospital. These plans can save you from a hospital bill that might otherwise bankrupt you. However, today hospital stays are getting shorter and more and more healthcare is being done in doctors offices. If keeping your premiums low is important, consider a plan that covers you both in the hospital and in the doctors office that has a high deductible.
  • School Sponsored Clinics And Urgent Care Centers. They cover you well for the little things, but not so well for the big things. There may be no coverage for surgery or hospitalization. In contrast to hospital only plans, these plans my not cover you for a hospital stay or for surgeries.

Finding the right student health insurance is important. College students and graduating college students have a lot of choices. Hopefully reading this article will make you aware of the options that you have. This article can be copied and reprinted but only in its entirety. The article was originally published on http://www.1800insurancect.com/articles/student-health-insurance-article.htm. When starting a new business, there are many important decisions to make and many rules and procedures that must be addressed. While there is no single source for every state, the following checklist and steps have been developed to assist you in starting your business.

Choose and Register A Business Name For some people business names come easily, for others finding the right one is a major challenge. I have listed the basic steps to follow in naming a business. There are multiple “rules-of-thumbs” that tend to be contradictory. Some insist that a business name should be descriptive of the business and others suggest that being unique in the best way to be remembered.

Keep in mind that your business name is an important part of your marketing effort. It is a major component of how customers; perceive your business. Your business image is based on this perception. So, it is critical that it reflect the image that you want your customers to have of your business.

My tendency is to go with what your inner voice (gut) says is right for you. You are the one who has to live with this business day and night for a long time to come. So choose something you feel good about. One test might be to think about the name being splashed across a major headline. How does it feel to see the name in print representing your business? If it feels good, go with it.

If all else fails, there are businesses available that will help you determine the right name. If you go this route, look for a good fit for you. You want this to reflect your concept, not someone else’s. Keep in mind this is one of the most important decisions you will make about your business.

As part of naming your business, you may also want to design a logo for your business. If creativity is not your strong suit, there are many businesses out there that can help you. While this may seem excessive, you will never regret the time you have spent on this part of setting up your business. This is the first and most critical part of marketing your business. Do it right and your future marketing will be much easier to plan and implement.

Legal Issues. Picking a name for your business requires much more than just creativity and a working knowledge of your target market. First you will need to decide which business structure you will use, since each structure has its own peculiarities.

Of equal importance, is finding out whether your name or a very similar name is being used by another business, and if so, what rights they may or may not have to use the name in the area where you want to do business. Keep in mind that some businesses only file trademarks within their locality, so it is possible that the same name can be used elsewhere.

Search and Registration. Trade names can be registered through the state Secretary of States offices, and for wider marketplace protection, through the US Patent and Trademark office. Businesses should first use the USPTO’s online system to search all state and federal trademark registers to see if the proposed name is being used.

Domain Names. For many businesses that operate on the Web, trade names are synonymous with domain names. There are many online services available to check if your proposed Domain name is available.

Select a Name and Legal Structure

  • Sole proprietorship
  • Partnership
  • Limited liability corporation
  • Corporation

Sole Proprietorship in general can be established with little or no formalities. However, it will generally be necessary to obtain one or more local business licenses from the cities and or counties in which you will operate, and in some cases, you might need a state license as well. If you make sales of tangible property at a retail level, you will be required to obtain a sales tax license for the collecting of sales tax.

No separate tax-form filing is required. You simply report that your business financial information on standard tax forms is available for sole proprietorship. Doing business as a sole proprietor is much simpler than operating as any other kind of business legal entity. If you have no employees, you are not required to pay or withhold any employment taxes, withhold any federal or state income tax from wages, or obtain workers’ compensation coverage for yourself.

Partnerships allow the creation of either a general partnership in which all partners are liable for the debts of the business, or a limited partnership, in which only the general partners are liable for debts. It is generally necessary to obtain one or more local business licenses from the cities, counties, and possibly the state in which you will operate.

Partnerships, as entities, are not subject to state income tax. Instead, the income or loss of the partnership, as allocated among the partners, must be reported on the personal income tax returns of each individual partner. However, there might be some local or state annual fees or tax required.

A partnership agreement, for any type of partnership, should spell out in considerable detail all aspects of the partnership. It is recommended that you contact both an attorney and an accountant to discuss all the legal and financial aspects of your partnership agreement and make sure it is all in writing.

Concerning corporations, a business may incorporate without an attorney, but legal advice is highly recommended. The corporate structure is usually complex and more costly to organize. Control depends on stock ownership. Persons with the largest stock ownership control the corporation. All corporations must file articles of incorporation with the business services office in the state you wish to operate in.

Limited liability companies (LLC) are very attractive entities for many small businesses. While offering much of the flexibility plus the flow through tax treatment of a partnership for federal and state income tax purposes, there might be fees and permits required for city, county, and state levels.

With both options, it is recommended that you contact both an attorney and an accountant to discuss all the legal and financial aspects of corporation and LLC. For someone who is just starting out, you might want to be a sole proprietor. This is the easiest and least expensive option to get started with. As your business grows and you hire employees or expand your operation, you should discuss the other options with an attorney and your accountant.

Taxation

All businesses must pay taxes. When you register your business, most states and the federal government will require pertinent forms for compliance. A business start date is very important because you will be required to file income taxes and collect sales tax from that day.

Business Plan

A well-written business plan is the story of how you are going to run your business. It is your opportunity to chart the path where you want to go. Starting a business without a plan is like going on a trip without a map or destination in mind. It might be a fun trip. then again, it might not. Running a business in not a simple jaunt. You need to map and destination already in mind if you are to stay in business. How ever, writing that map and destination for your business does not need to be a complicated process.

Your business plan establishes you checkpoints and goal along with setting a timeline for accomplishing certain objectives. Knowing who the plan is written for will help in making it a better plan.

The essential components of a business plan are:

  1. Executive Summary. A concise overview of the entire plan along with a history of your company
  2. Marketing Analysis. Illustrates your knowledge about the particular industry your business is in, and presents general highlights and conclusions of any marketing research data you have collected.
  3. Company Description. How all of the different elements of your business fit together.
  4. Organization and Management. Your company’s organizational structure; details about the ownership of your company; profiles of your management team; and the qualifications of your board of directors.
  5. Marketing and Sales Strategies. How you are going to attract and service customers.
  6. Service or Product Line. What you are selling?
  7. Funding Request. The amount of funding you will need to start or expand your business.
  8. Financial. The critical financial statements to include in your business plan packet
  9. Appendix. Additional supporting information.

Choosing and Open a Company Bank Account

Once you have established your business name, formed your legal structure, and taken care of all legal tasks, you have to open a bank account for your business. One simple business checking account should be fine. As your business grows, you can discuss other options with your accountant.

Many business owners do not thoroughly consider their needs when selection a bank. Although there are laws and regulations that govern the activities of banks, saving and loans, credit unions and investments firms, not all financial institutions are the same. Each institution establishes its own policies for:

  1. Types of products and services they offer
  2. Criteria for qualifying for a loan
  3. Minimum balances for accounts
  4. Interest rates
  5. Fees

While one bank may specialize in home loans, or auto loans another may focus on commercial loans for businesses. Some banks may only offer basic deposit accounts while others have lock box services, sweep accounts and even online banking.

That why it is important to evaluate your business needs before you select your bank.

Consider some of the things your bank can help you with:

  1. Assist you with the cash management needs of your business.
  2. Offer investments products of varying maturities – overnight to long-term certificates of deposits.
  3. Offer investments of varying risk.
  4. Provide advice about qualifying for the loan that best meets your needs.
  5. Provide special loan programs for small businesses.
  6. Assist you with finding financial information on your industry
  7. Compare financial institutions in order to find the one that will serve your business’s needs and will also provide support and assistance during each stage of your business. Selecting and instituting that you can work with will be especially important as your business grows. Start gathering information to help you make this important decision.
  8. Approach the decision as a long-term investment.
  9. Ask your accountant or lawyer to introduce you to a banker who they are familiar with.
  10. Check your local chamber of commerce.
  11. Look for a complementary personality – someone you can relate to and are comfortable with.
  12. Introduce yourself to the bank manager. If you are looking for a loan, ask to meet the loan officer who will be assigned to you.
  13. Find out how long they have been in their current position.
  14. Tell them about your business and the form of organization so they can tell you what special products and services or restrictions that might apply.
  15. You should not make this decision on pricing alone. But do compare interest rates on deposits accounts and basic consumer loans. Also, look carefully at the fees for services.

It is a good idea to establish a relationship with a banker before you need money. The right banker will be someone that understands the needs of emerging and growing businesses.

Professional Help

There are many ways that someone well versed in their field can assist you with your business. An Accountant can help you with setting up you bookkeeping structure, tax planning and a payroll set-up. Attorneys can help you with your contacts, setting up your business structure and lease reviews. An Insurance Agent can help you with planning the best overall package for your type of business.

Insurance

You should have the proper insurance for all of your equipment and vehicles as required by law or needed. Some jurisdictions may require you to carry business liability insurance. This can be obtained for around $200.00 to $1000.00 per year.

Business Counselors can help you with your business planning, loan applications, and referrals to other professionals. SCORE volunteers and Small Business Development Centers offer some counseling for small businesses.

On reason to contact a professional would be to find out about issues before them become a problem, especially legal or tax issues. Even if you are relatively comfortable with how you have set up your business, having an experienced person look over what you are doing can be helpful.

Points to think about when working with a professional:

  1. Find someone that you can talk to, and feel comfortable with. A competent professional should never be to busy to give their clients the time they need to address their business issues, or return phone calls.
  2. Find out what communication method work best: phone, Fax, e-mail, in person or regular mail.
  3. Ask about billing rates and payment process up front, and what fines and/or penalties that professional is willing to take responsibility for, if they occur.
  4. Before you leave a meeting, review any points that have been agreed upon for services to be provided. Or, further research to be done and the projected completion timetable, including the tasks that you have agreed to complete.
  5. Use a calendar to not these timelines, as well as approaching deadlines for tax filings.
  6. Ask if they will consult with other professionals (in other fields) as needed, and whom they work with already.
  7. If you do not understand something, ask for clarification.

Selecting a Lawyer

Chances are that you will need legal advice right from the inception of your business. There are a number of legal issues where you might need help in your business in addition to getting your company set up properly authorized to conduct business.

Selecting a lawyer to work with your business should be done carefully. A lawyer will be one of your key advisors – you will want to ensure that you are comfortable with him or her and find is easy to exchange ideas. It does you no good if you are intimidated or uncomfortable asking questions, or discussing problems. Sometimes it might be necessary to change attorneys as your business needs change, but this can be an expensive process. Before contracting a lawyer, learn about how lawyers charge for their services so that you approach them with a good sense of what to expect.

Here is a practical approach in selecting a lawyer:

  1. Ask for referrals from people whose opinions you respect and who have worked with attorneys representing small businesses.
  2. Set up interviews with two or three attorneys. There might be a fee involved, but many attorneys will waive the fee for the initial interview.
  3. Keep the interview focused on its purpose that is, determining if you are comfortable and have a rapport with the attorney.
  4. Ask for references for other small business clients and contact them.
  5. After you have interviewed two or three attorneys, you will be prepared to select the right one to help you with your business.

The following questions should help you get started with the interview process:

  1. How have you assisted other small businesses?
  2. Do you have knowledge about my industry or business?
  3. How would you charge me for your services?
  4. What can I do to help reduce you fees?
  5. What do you think in the attorney’s most important job?

An attorney should emphasize protecting small business from legal problems and future litigation. An attorney should be able to help guide your through the maze of regulations that govern the small business. Depending on your situation you may need someone that is an expert at contracts, leases, loan documents, transactions, patents or trademarks. They should be also skilled in communication and negotiations.

Legal Requirements

To operate a business legally one need to meet all the laws for operating a business in your state and local community. In the United States that means the laws of the federal government, state governments of every state in which you do business, and in many locales, even city and/or county laws governing business operation.

All of the US states have business resource offices that provide information on the legal requirements for operating a business in that state. Not that you need to meet the legal requirements for every state in which you will be conducting business. This applies to Internet transactions if you are going to be mailing a product into a particular state. Most states consider that a form of doing business in their state.

For the U.S. government, most businesses are going to need an Employer Identification Number even if they do not have employees. The IRS provides clearly written documentation of what is required in terms of reporting. Not only are there laws and regulations governing the actual registration of the business and the business name, but there may also be licenses and permits needed to operate certain types of business. You can find out more about such regulations from your state business resource offices or the city in which you wish to operate in.

Licenses and Permits

With so many tasks involved in starting a business, it is easy to overlook the important legal requirements associated with registration, permits and licenses.

  • Federal Requirements – With the exception of Sole Proprietors, most business must apply for an Employer Indemnification Number (EIN) regardless of whether they have employees.
  • State requirements – While business licensing varies from state to state, if your state requires one, you have to obtain it.
  • Business Licenses – A state business license is the main document required for tax purpose and conduction other basic functions.
  • Tax Registration – If the state in which you operate has a state income tax, you will have to register and obtain and employer identification number from you state Department of Revenue or Treasury Department. If you are engaging in retail sales, you will need to obtain a sales tax license.
  • Trade Name Registration – If your business will only be operated in your local community, registering your company name with the state may be sufficient.

Startup Financing

Finding the right financing that fits a business’ goals is a continuing challenge for almost every small business. For startup businesses this can be one of the biggest hurdles in getting off the ground. Some entrepreneurs can be incredibly creative in finding ways to fund their ideas. Many others work another job as a way to fund their personal business. Most companies, however, find their startup funding in more conventional ways.

The most common sources:

  1. 70% Personal Savings
  2. 45% Banks and Finance Companies
  3. 25% Friends and Relatives
  4. 10% Individual Investors
  5. 5% Government Loans
  6. 1% Venture Capital

Using personal funds is very common, partly because few bank and finance companies will loan to people who will not risk some of their own personal funds. However, in the long run, most businesses will need external funding of some sort.

One of the toughest questions is how much capital is enough. A quick model for cash needs suggests determining how much capital is needed for one year of operation. That first year, keep your initial capital separate from your income. That income should be then the initial capital for the second year. Amounts you will need to finance are that initial capital and any growth you want to introduce above and beyond the initial model. Most companies that are successful today have started that simple.

Setting Up Business Operations

Running you business on a day-to-day basis is comprised of many different small decisions. While none of these decisions will make or break your business, they can each make a tremendous difference in how much time you have to get your real work done. An inefficiently designed workspace or the wrong equipment can influence greatly how harried and tired you are completing your primary work.

Given that you have done a thorough job in developing your business plan, you should have a clear idea of what equipment is needed to produce your product or service. To open your doors you need to have some basic managerial procedures in place. These procedures include everything from mail to good organization. Additionally, you need to have backup plans should one of your suppliers all of a sudden goes out of business or double its process. It may not be critical if you run out of paper for your copier, but you will definitely be stresses it is a product that is critical to your selling. Keep a list of alternates in your file. You will not regret it. It would not hurt you to review them a few times a year. You might discover that changes have occurred that make them more attractive and/or possible relationships that could be useful in renegotiating supply relationships with the suppliers you currently have.

Record Keeping System

Record keeping systems are frequently one of the biggest challenges in a small business. Perhaps the problem is that the creative side of running a small business in often at odds with “bean counting” side. Taking time to organize a good system can be tedious and time consuming, but it only takes one visit by the tax auditor to convince business owners that an organized system is useful. Why is record keeping systems important? Because they provide you the basis for all the reports you need to make to governmental agencies, banks, and potential funders, plus they provide you with an overall picture of how your business is doing and where it is headed. Financial statements are a way to track your progress towards goals and provide you with the financial information needed to make decisions as you go along.

Your basic record keeping system should be easy to use, understandable, reliable, accurate and timely. Here are some of the basics a system should include:

  1. Business Journal to organize transactions (receipts, disbursements, sales and purchase).
  2. A Well organized filing system.
  3. Monthly reports on cash flow, accounts receivables, accounts payable, income statements and balance sheet.

Important questions

  • Why should I keep records? Good records will help you monitor the progress of your business, prepare you financial statements, identify sources of receipts, keep track of deductible expenses, prepare your tax returns and support items reported on tax returns.
  • What kind of records should I keep? You may choose any record keeping system suited to your business that clearly shows your income. Except in a few cases, the law does not require any special kind of records. However, the business you are in effects the type of records you need to keep for federal tax purpose.
  • How long should I keep records? The length of time you should keep a document depends on the action, expense, or event of the document records. You must keep your records as long as they may be needed to prove the income or deduction on a tax return.
  • What is the burden of proof? The responsibility to prove entries, deductions, and statements made on your tax returns is known as the burden of proof. You must be able to prove (substantiate) certain elements of expenses to deduct them. Generally, taxpayers meet their burden of proof by having the information and receipts for the expenses.

Opening Your Doors for Business

You have been over your checklists multiple times and everything seems to be in place. It is time to take the big step and open your doors for business. This is when you discover whether your are a real entrepreneur. What do you do with your time? The choices you make today will set the tone for your business from now on out.

The two biggest obstacles to getting going and keeping going are motivation and organization. Many people have no problem responding when there is a clear task in front of them. When you are starting a business, however, you do not have someone telling you what to do. You are the one making the lists and making certain things to accomplish. And this does not just mean filling customers orders, but taking care of everything.

Self-motivation in not something we are born with. As babies, we are thought in terms of immediate gratification. As business owners, we have to learn in terms of longer-term rewards. If you are going to stay in business, sometimes you have to tolerate doing things that are not fun.

Proper organization is a good way not to get behind and stressed. You have to institute good time management. In order to manage your time well, you need to have a complete list of all that needs to be done. List everything that needs to happen. Continue adding items to the list. For some people it is easier to list all the large tasks, then break them into their component parts. Once you have all these tasks on one list, put them on a calendar. That will give you a “to-do” list to structure each day. As your business grows, the list will change and grow. There is a wide variety of forms, logs and checklists available to help you

Finally, most important, give your health and well-being priority during the stress of opening your doors. Plan time for activities unrelated to your business so you can come to your tasks relaxed and clear-headed. You will not regret it and you will be amazed at what a difference it can make to your bottom line. Investing in yourself can be the hidden ingredient that adds the touch of quality to what you bring to the marketplace. Put that on you list and make certain it gets done!

Items To Be Completed Check If Completed:

  • Choose and Register a Business Name

In Tough Times, College Students Must Cut Expenses

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 5:04 am

For far too long, college students have spent money that doesn’t have to be spent. Now, with the economy faltering and the cost of college at an all time high, more students are dropping out of college for financial reasons. Other students are leaving college with huge debts and a twinge of fear. That’s why wise students are aggressively looking for every possible way to cut their costs and increase their income.

Here are a few ideas for students and parents to consider.

Seek Out Grants, Scholarships And Financial Aid, Not Loans – Over the past thirty years, colleges have lulled parents and students into thinking that loans are financial aid. They are not. Loans have to be paid back. They place a large and immediate financial burden on graduates and often last for more than twenty years. True financial aid is money that doesn’t have to be paid back. Since it exists in many forms, students and parents should start looking for aid in the junior year of high school. This doesn’t mean that students won’t end up with some loans. However, if good students start early and work diligently, more true financial aid will flow their way.

Start Off At A Community College – Students can dramatically cut their costs by attending a well respected community college for the first two years of college. At the same time, if they seek financial aid, work at a part-time job while in college and also work summers, they can completely avoid taking out loans. In this way, students can get through the first two years nearly debt free. Caution: Identify the two colleges to which you are most likely to transfer. Then, make certain that you take only courses that will be accepted by those colleges. Also, keep your grades up. Transfer colleges won’t accept poor grades.

Start Off At A Lower Cost Four Year College – The same advice about Community Colleges will apply to lower cost, four year colleges. Choose wisely and you will benefit.

Attend A College That Offers An Accelerated Degree Program – Some colleges offer you the opportunity to complete your college degree in less that four years. If you have the temperament and work ethic, you can save time and money. However, only highly motivated and dedicated students are usually suitable for such a commitment.

Increase or Decrease The Credits You Take – At some colleges, students pay the same tuition whether they take 15 or 18 credits. If the student is both willing and capable, why not take 18 credits and get one course at no extra cost. By doing that, some students can cut out a full semester and graduate in three and a half years. For students who work full time and even for some part-timers, taking six or nine credits may be a way to get through college without college loans. This will greatly depend on your income.

Seek Out And Work For An Employer That Offers An Educational Assistance Program – A number of employers still offer educational assistance programs for their full-time employees. Investigate their requirements. Most require at least one year of service and pursuit of a degree that is job related. Many reimburse a percentage of your costs for tuition and books based on the grades you achieve.

Attend A Local College And Live At Home – At many colleges, room and board will represent around 20% of your costs, sometimes more. By attending a local college, you can nearly eliminate these costs. In some cases, the local college may also be less expensive. When you eat your meals at home and take a brown bag lunch, additional savings, however small, will result.

Sell Your Car and Ride A Bike – If you live at home, you can achieve a dramatic savings by eliminating your car during the college years. Yes, for many students, this is a psychological and emotional issue. However, a car can be a money pit (purchase price, maintenance, repairs, fuel and insurance). If you make the sacrifice and find other less expensive means of transportation, this action can pay off.

Take Some Online Courses – Many colleges now offer online courses. They eliminate your transportation needs and offer greater convenience. Furthermore, some of these courses can be taken as you have time because classes can be viewed at your convenience. This approach is expedient and a cost effective alternative for people with busy lives.

Cut Up Your Credit Cards – If you don’t have the cash to pay for something, don’t buy it now. Wait until you have the money. Too many young adults graduate from college not only with college loans, they also owe money on their credit cards. Some owe more than $5,000.

Evaluate Your Spending – Some students have difficulty understanding the difference between needs and wants. However, almost anyone can chart their monthly spending to see where their money is going. Armed with that information, many students can cut their spending by 10 – 20%.

Get A Part-Time Job – If you are attending college on a full-time basis, you should be able to find a part-time job that will cover some of your weekly expenses. When money is tight, a part-time job is more than an option.

A Campus-Wide Lawn Sale – With permission from the college, any student or student group can take the initiative and arrange for a campus-wide lawn sale/tag sale/street festival during the semester. Individual students and student groups will then have the opportunity to reserve lawn blanket space for the sale of their used Electronic Equipment, CD’s, DVD’s, Books, Clothing, and anything else that may be relevant. As appropriate, Entertainment and Food items may also be provided to attract buyers. For the most enterprising and businesslike students, this kind of campus event can result in a substantial amount of income.

When money is tight, there are only two prudent things that students can do. One is to reduce expenses; the other is to increase income. Since a college education is a requirement for many good jobs, serious students must face their financial challenges with a willingness to make the sacrifices that will get them through the tough times. It’s those sacrifices that will strengthen their resolve and lead to greater success.
